With the passing of the Intellectual Property Rights from Publicly Financed Research and Development Act in 2008, all MRC researchers are now obligated to disclose any potential IP developed to the MRC IC and, where appropriate, the IC is required to protect and exploit the IP for the good of the people of South Africa. This website is designed to guide you through this process.

The MRC, through the Innovation Centre and together with SASOL, won the Technology Top 100 award for Excellence in the Management of Research in the established enterprise category.
The Technology Top 100 Awards is a Science & Technology initiative which aims to reward companies that have achieved success through the use of technology, innovation and people. Organizations were required to send in applications detailing their innovative projects and prove that their business was able to meet the challenges of the market through new technologies.
Besides the joint first place award, the MRC was also a finalist in the following categories:
- ‘Excellence in the Management of Innovation’
- ‘Excellence in the Management of People’
- ‘Excellence in the Management of Systems’
Receiving the awards on behalf of Medical Research Council were Dr Tony Bunn, Dr Michelle Mulder and Mr Saberi Marais of the MRC Innovation Centre.
   
At the SA BioPlan gala dinner organized by the Emory University (Atlanta, USA) and the Innovation Fund, which took place in December 2008, the MRC (Phedisanang Pharmaceuticals Initiative) made it into the Top 4 Category for its extensive work on the commercialization of the IKS malaria treatment inventions.
As a result, the MRC has been invited to the US for specialized internships later this year.
